Protecting Yourself & Children

Violence, or the threat of violence that takes place between relatives or between people in a relationship is called domestic violence or domestic abuse. It can happen to all people; whether rich or poor, young or old, male or female, gay or straight. It not only affects the adults involved but has an enormous impact on your children. It includes physical abuse but also bullying, emotional or sexual abuse intimidation or limiting someone’s freedom. There is no need for any physical violence to have taken place. Everyone has the right to live a life free of domestic violence and abuse.

Our specialist team is able to advise and guide you. If necessary we can act urgently to protect you and your children. We will explain all the options available to you to safeguard your family either to obtain an injunction (known as a non-molestation order) or to obtain an order to prevent a child being removed from your care or their school by another family member (known as Prohibited Steps Orders).

We have close and strong links with agencies such as the police, refuges and local authorities. We regularly advise the police on domestic violence issues and are well regarded as experts in this field.

Forced Marriage

In a forced marriage a person is coerced into marrying someone against their will and under duress. They may be physically threatened or emotionally blackmailed to do so. It is an abuse of human rights and is unlawful. It is important to distinguish between an arranged marriage, which is not unlawful, and a forced marriage. An arranged marriage is where you have a choice as to whether to accept the arrangement or not. The tradition of arranged marriages has operated within many communities and countries for a long time and continues to do so.

Goodman Ray has a team of experts who are experienced in representing and protecting clients who are either threatened with forced marriage, who have been forced into a marriage or stranded abroad as a result of a forced marriage. Our team have undertaken specialist training in this complex area and are experienced in the necessary court procedures. We provide training on forced marriages and honour based violence to local agencies such as Hackney social services, the NIA project, IMECE (a Turkish women’s organisation) and domestic violence training to advocates.
