Black History Month – Professor Barbara Mills KC

Barbara Mills KC

Barbara Mills KC is a Ghanian-born barrister and joint Head of Chambers at 4PB, London.

She was called in 1990 and took Silk in 2020. She also sits a Deputy High Court judge, and has been a Recorder for over a decade.

She specialises in Children cases. She is regularly instructed by Local Authorities and Guardians in complex care proceedings. In addition, she has extensive experience advising and acting for parties in private law proceedings often with an international element in the High Court.

As well as this, she has another string to add to her bow by being set to become the first Black person and person of colour to lead the Bar in 2025 after being elected as vice-chair of the Bar Council for next year. She is only the fifth woman to undertake this role and the first Family practitioner in 35 years.

The Bar Council provides representation, support and services for barristers in England and Wales.
Her achievements are a great service to the community. As Vice-Chair of the Bar Council, her plans are to focus on raising the profile of the publicly funded family Bar, as well as to continue the vitally important work on equality, diversity and inclusion at the Bar. We shine the spotlight on her today.
