In a career spanning over the last 30 years, Peggy has been a pioneer in the field of children and family law; as well as advising successive governments on policy and legislation. Her role in the development of policy began when she was chair of the children’s committee of Resolution and advised on the drafting of the Children Act 1989. She has been a member of the Family law Advisory Board, the President’s Interdisciplinary Committee and has served on the London Area Public Funding Review Committee.
Peggy is recognised by all as an expert in law and policy relating to child protection, post- separation parenting, wardship and adoption. Her firm has consistently championed the rights of children and parents involved in public law and adoption cases. Her grasp of the wide policy issues is balanced by her finely honed client care skills. She has forged strong professional relationships with leading child and family psychiatrists, and has a deep understanding of troubled children and adolescents. Her straight-talking, good-humoured ability to get alongside her young clients and enable them to trust her is remarkable. Her skill and shrewd understanding of the problems her clients are facing, and her pragmatic, can-do approach to solving those problems, is a feature of her work, whatever the social and economic background of that client.
Peggy is regarded by judges and opponents as one of the leading practitioners in complex children protection cases. She is described in Chambers UK as “simply the best children’s lawyer around“. Peggy has always championed the rights and interests of children and was pivotal in setting up, with Action for Children, the first website specifically for children in care.
Peggy has previously won UNICEF’s Child Rights Lawyer of the Year in 2001, and Family Lawyer of the Year (Legal Aid Lawyer Awards) in 2005.
